IC

NAME: Atsushi Nakajima
AGE: 18
SUITABILITY: N/A (he is human and of age)
CANON: Bungo Stray Dogs
CANON POINT: the end of season 5

ABILITIES: Atsushi's ability is called "Beast Beneath the Moonlight". It has it's own wikipedia page here. So if you want nitty-gritty details they can be found there, I'll still write out what his ability is though.

The most basic component of his ability is that he can turn into a white tiger. This happens automatically at full moons if he is touched by moonlight, but he has better control of it the rest of the month. When he transforms fully into a tiger, he doesn't have control of himself. He has a tiger brain during that time. In addition, his fur is so strong it repels bullets and breaks blades, he has enhanced strength, speed, stamina, and senses, and he has fast healing that can repair almost any injury that isn't immediately fatal.

But he is not limited to all or nothing though! Atsushi can call upon specific parts of his powers as needed without fully transforming. If he needs to fight, he can turn just his hands and forearms into tiger paws. If he loses a leg (which happens multiple times in the series), he can focus and grow it right back. When he wants to call upon specific powers though, he usually has to transform specific parts of himself into a tiger. Like, increased speed requires his legs to be tiger legs, bullet repelling means transforming his arm and using it as a shield, and so forth.

Atsushi also has a few named attacks, but they're all just "using the powers I listed here but in specific ways", so if you want to see more of those you can read the wiki link.

AS A NOTE: Atsushi's ability is stable in canon because another ability is working as a power limiter on it. That person isn't in the game currently (at least I think now, I didn't see any reserves for Fukuzawa), so his ability would be more volatile without that suppression. More random transformations based on his emotional state (anxiety causes power fluctuations, anger causes transformation), and he will be fully tiger at every full moon if he is outside and in the moonlight. If he is inside and away from windows he will be fine, the moonlight has to touch him for him to fully transform.

I don't think he needs to be nerfed? He's strong, but not "destroy the world" strong. Also with his disposition he rarely transforms unless he has to (to fight a strong enemy, to rescue someone, etc.).

VICES: self-critical - Atsushi has a rather horrific past of abuse and neglect. He grew up in an orphanage and was physically and mentally abused often. Due to this, he has a low self-worth and thinks too critically of himself. You know how normally people judge themselves based on their intentions and others based on their actions? It's the opposite for Atsushi. He assumes everyone has good intentions until proven otherwise, but he's always beating himself up over his failures. It isn't AS bad at his canonpoint compared to the start of the series (the boy has had personal growth over five seasons), but he still struggles with it.

self-sacrificing - Partially because of his past, Atsushi has very little regard for his own life. He thinks he can't be allowed to live unless he's living his life to protect those who can't protect themselves. He has a whole internal monologue about this in one episode and decides that, if he can save the people in that episode's crisis, then he can be allowed to live. Since this is a seinen show, the anime and manga do not shy away from showing how harmful this attitude is. He gets grievously injured time and time again, pushes himself to his limits, and never once asks for recognition for his sacrifices. He feels like he doesn't deserve the recognition. He saves people quietly, taking the burden onto himself, without any thought of recognition or compensation (beyond his usual paycheck from the Armed Detective Agency). I know normally this is kind of a weak throw of a 'vice', but I feel like it's important for Atsushi because of how many times he's lost limbs or been vivisected for this idea of protecting others.

fear of being alone - He's getting better about it, but Atsushi struggles with fear, specifically the fear of being alone. He doesn't always trust his own judgement, and if there's nobody nearby to reassure him or point him on the right path he gets anxious and afraid of making mistakes. At his canon point he internalizes that fear more than he reacts outwardly (running away, crying, etc.) but he does freeze up when he's scared. Notably, in season 5, he was the only member of the Agency not incapacitated and he needed to fight. But his fear of fighting alone paralyzed him, and he wasn't able to take action until another ally appeared and they were able to fight together. He's even said this in canon too: that his greatest fear isn't dying or being hurt, but rather being alone.

VIRTUES: kind - The kanji in Atsushi's given name means "kindness", and boy does he live up to that name. He's always thinking of others and helping out whenever he can. But it's not just putting in the work that makes this a virtue: Atsushi helps others while smiling and telling people that it's okay, he's here and he will help. When he has to fight people, he tries his best to disarm rather than kill. His reason being that everyone deserves a chance to make amends. And while he does struggle with his self-esteem and gets startled quite easily, he is a generally happy person. When he says something, he means it from the bottom of his heart. And time and time again, he's saves the day not through strength, but through kindness.

hard-working - Though he may complain when work is forced on him by lazy co-workers (Dazai, Ranpo) he generally has a good work ethic. He's a newbie at the Agency, but he still takes all of the work seriously and completes it on time. Client reports are finished with ease, and he takes his time to fill out all the important details for each case he works on. He'll spend hours staking out areas purely to find a lost cat, or he'll help convince neighborhood "problems" to be good and help out the community. Whenever he's working on something, he is very thorough and sees things through to the end. He's often exhausted by the end of the day, but it's worth it for a job well done.

trusting - In general, Atsushi trusts people. He does exercise some judgement- proven liars don't get as much trust as other people, for example- but so long as you haven't done something to earn his ire Atsushi will generally trust you. This is why Atsushi can easily overcome trust exercises (or "trust games" when enemies are fucking with him or the Agency): he automatically trusts that people will do the right thing, and he acts accordingly. This trust is extended to new people too: unless you prove to him you are an asshole, he will trust you and believe what you tell him. This makes it easy for him to form bonds with people, since he's not suspicious of people without very good reason.

(As a note for this survey: Atsushi tends to rate himself more negatively than he actually is because of his self-critical nature. So his numbers will be a bit off compared to his virtues/vices + the explanations he gives.)

SURVEY

▶ I REGULARLY MAKE NEW FRIENDS.
▷ Ehhh....3? I mean, I meet plenty of new people, and I've made a lot of friends in the last few months. But not everyone I meet ends up becoming my friend. So a 3 would be right, yeah.

▶ SEEING OTHER PEOPLE CRY MAKES ME WANT TO CRY TOO.
▷ Oh, 1. Absolutely. Seeing people cry makes me tear up pretty easily. I mean, it's my job to help people, so seeing people so sad just makes me want to help them.

▶ I OFTEN MAKE A BACKUP PLAN FOR A BACKUP PLAN.
▷ ...5...I'm not the one who makes the backup plans. That's what Dazai-san does. I kind of have to just wing it if the plans don't work. Usually things turn out okay! But it's because of Dazai-san's plans, not mine.

▶ I USUALLY STAY CALM, EVEN WHEN UNDER A LOT OF PRESSURE.
▷ Mmmnnnn...I want to say I do, but I know I freak out a lot too. That's probably a 3. Unless someone else is there helping me, I can get really scared in tough situations. But I've pulled through on my own sometimes too, which is why it's right in the middle.

▶ I AM VERY SENTIMENTAL.
▷ Oh yeah, definitely. That's a 1. We see so many people at the Agency, and sometimes I find myself tearing up just hearing their stories. And I still have everything I have been given by other people, even some pieces of candy. I should eat them before they expire, but...they're special, you know?

▶ EVEN A SMALL MISTAKE CAN CAUSE ME TO DOUBT MY OVERALL ABILITIES AND KNOWLEDGE.
▷ ...did whoever make this survey watch me specifically? This seems kind of pointed...oh, um! Sorry, that's a 1.

▶ I AM MORE INCLINED TO FOLLOW MY HEAD THAN MY HEART.
▷ Er... I try to follow my head, it's what detectives are supposed to do. But...well, I'm a rookie. I'll get there eventually! So for now I have to put a 3, since I do follow my heart a lot.

▶ I AM PRONE TO WORRYING THAT THINGS WILL TAKE A TURN FOR THE WORSE.
▷ Ah. Another pointed question... I wouldn't say I worry all the time. Just sometimes, especially when I'm trying to fight a strong enemy on my own. So 2?

▶ I ENJOY WATCHING PEOPLE ARGUE.
▷ What? No! Of course I don't enjoy that, I'm not Dostoevsky! ...okay that was a little mean. Even if they're at odds with the Agency's goals, he does have his reasons. But still, the answer is 5 for me. I don't like watching people fight.

▶ I TEND TO AVOID DRAWING ATTENTION TO MYSELF.
▷ There's some times you can't really avoid that, like when you are giving a speech or questioning witnesses. Unfortunately, drawing attention to myself is part of my job. Outside of that though, I would say a 2. It's nicer to go unnoticed, then nobody is yelling at you.

▶ I OFTEN DO THINGS AT THE LAST POSSIBLE MOMENT.
▷ Okay, this happens, but not on purpose! I try to do things in a timely manner, but I always get handed last-minute work, or something crazy happens in the middle of a mission. It's outside circumstances, not me. But does that count...I'll just put a 3.

▶ I FIND IT EASY TO EMPATHIZE WITH A PERSON WHOSE EXPERIENCES ARE VERY DIFFERENT FROM MINE.
▷ I guess? I mean, I put a lot of work into it too, which might be why it comes easy to me. But a lot of times when people are being jerks, they're just having a bad day or something. Or they're doing something awful, but for misguided reasons. You can find better solutions if you listen to people, and honestly people deserve the chance to be heard. I would like to think people would try to understand me, even though I'm different too. So 1.

▶ I BECOME BORED OR LOSE INTEREST WHEN THE DISCUSSION GETS HIGHLY THEORETICAL.
▷ Surprisingly no! Ranpo-san and Dazai-san are way smarter than me, and sometimes I get lost in what they're saying. But it's not boring or anything, I still try to listen along and get at least part of what they're saying. Who knows, maybe if I keep listening I'll learn things from them. So 5.

▶ I RARELY FEEL INSECURE.
▷ ...5...No questions about that, it's what I have to put. ... okay okay, yes I'm insecure! I'm insecure about being insecure too! Next question!

▶ I AM STILL BOTHERED BY MISTAKES I MADE A LONG TIME AGO.
▷ I mean, yeah. But everyone is, right? It's a part of being human, we learn from the mistakes we made before. And if you don't learn, you just stay stagnant, never growing as a person. So 1. I...made a lot of mistakes in the past. But recognizing that means I can be better in the future.

SUIT REQUESTS: dealer's choice! I'm fine with all four of them.
RANK REQUESTS: Give him a low rank, let him suffer being poor.
SAMPLES: sample 1 - For context, it's an event thread based off of Omori. The whole thing is good, but this section and this section are the most important. Look at this boy turn his fears into the strength needed to protect others.

sample 2 (and the continuation thread) - Atsushi playing dirty dice with Eiden. It's a good demonstration of his lack of confidence in himself in a new situation, he only kept going with Eiden's reassurances.

sample 3 (and the overflow) - Atsushi's insightful observations of his co-workers shows how much he cares about them, and he also devalues himself because of his self-critical tendencies.
