Normally yes, but the idea is that you have other people in there with you. That way even if you're just sitting near each other, the body heat gets trapped by the blanket and keeps you all warm.
I guess if a member of the nobility or the merchant class had parents who passed away, they would be raised by another family they had close ties to. But... that does not sound like what you're talking about.
